Can you SHARE?

Voluntary Director Position

Apply by 31st March 2021

Introduction to SHARE:UK

Clare & Sam at SHARE:Frome Library of Things

SHARE:UK is set to incorporate as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) under which a network of independently-run Library of Things (LoTs) will operate nationwide. LoTs are like book libraries. You can sign up as a member and borrow your item for as long as you need before returning for someone else to be able to borrow it. Unlike book libraries LoTs have no books, but a grand array of ‘things’: DIY and gardening tools, hobby items, party particulars, kitchen gizmos, camping gear .. the list goes on.

We care passionately about delivering environmental, economical and social impacts. By shifting behaviours from individual consumption and ownership to those based on borrowing and sharing we reduce waste, reduce pollution, save people money, save them space in their own homes and cultivate community.

SHARE:Frome is an example of a LoT, has been in operation over 5 years and will be the first of many LoTs to operate within the federated charity structure headed up by SHARE:UK.

Role Overview

Trustees of the national body will eventually include representatives of the local members of the federation. Initially, however, we are looking for trustees with relevant backgrounds listed below to help us get the network of federated member SHARE Libraries up and running.

Board members will get involved with the strategic development of the organisation and may take on specific roles to support the staff team. We are specifically seeking people with skills in any of the following areas:

  • Social enterprise governance
  • Marketing
  • Finance
  • Fundraising
  • A chair of the board who would have extra time and passion to work alongside our manager in driving us forwards.

To have at least one of these positions covered by somebody who has previous charity trustee experience would prove to be invaluable.

Role Commitment

This is a great opportunity to make a tangible difference across the nation. The Climate Assembly report to Government has just been delivered and recommends that, “people should repair goods and share more, instead of owning all their appliances”. The time is now for to take SHARE operations mainstream. If you’d like to be part of the journey, can you commit:

  • 5-10 hours a month?
  • Meet online 4-5 times a year?
  • Represent the SHARE:UK national body?
  • Legally and responsibly become a UK charity board member?
